CHIPPENDALE, THOMAS The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director Being a large collection of the most elegant and useful designs of houshold furniture In The Gothic, Chinese and Modern Taste . London: printed for the author, and sold at his house in St. Martin's-Lane... 1754. First edition. Full brown morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, covers with three gilt rules, spine in six compartments between broad bands with rules, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. 18 1/8 x 11 inches (46 x 28 cm); half-title, title leaf in red and black, engraved dedication, iii-x, 27, [1] pp., with 161 very fine engraved plates (plate 113 provided in facsimile, two plates numbered 25). A few very minor marks to the binding, but an exceptionally handsome binding. Within, pale staining to the upper margin of a few plates, unobtrusive restoration to tears in the last plate, plate 113 in facsimile, but an attractive copy. The first edition of one of the most influential of 18th century furniture model books, used by many of the leading cabinet makers of the period as a sourcebook. C
