Paris: Paul Renouard, 1826. 2° (411 x 256mm). 24 hand-coloured lithographed plates, half title, dedication, text bound before plates (modern colouring, one plate repaired, one soiled, chipped and repaired at lower margin). 20th-century calf by Bernard Middleton, boards with blind borders of foliate rolls within double rules, spine gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-piece in one. RARE ALBUM OF DRAWINGS made by Choris on Kotzebue's voyage in the Rurik to the Pacific, 1815-1818. These fine views were not published in either his Voyage Pittoresque (1822) or in Kotzebue's account of the voyage (published in Weimar, 1821), and include scenes in South America, Easter Island, Hawaii, Kamchatka, the Marianas, Manila, Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. Choris was expedition artist on Russia's second circumnavigation which sailed through the South Seas and north to Alaska in search of the North-West Passage. The plates were first issued in six parts, wrappered, with explanatory text bound-in, and the plates plain or coloured. Some copies are known to have a further dedication to Emperor Nicholas I on a single-leaf, dated 1827. Forbes 632; Lada-Mocarski 90; Sabin 12885; Borba de Moraes 180. Not in Hill.
