CHURCHILL, Sir Winston Spencer (1874-1965) and Joseph STALIN (1879-1953)]. A 'Sovetskye' cigar, approximately 150 x 20mm, attached by threads to a cushion and mounted with a letter signed by Clementine Churchill to 'Mr Coe', Downing Street, 16 November 1942, 'I am so glad to be able to send you the enclosed cigar, which is one of those presented by Monsieur Stalin to my Husband on his recent visit to the Kremlin. I do hope it will be the means of raising an appreciable sum for my Red Cross "Aid to Russia" Fund', one page, 4°, framed and glazed. A CIGAR PRESENTED BY STALIN TO CHURCHILL. Churchill had flown to Moscow on 12 August 1942 in order to inform Stalin that there was no prospect of opening a second front in Europe that year: 'we parted in an atmosphere of goodwill', Churchill was to remember.
