Lawrence, Colonial Office, Downing Street, 17 July 1922, with autograph envelope addressed in Churchill's hand. 1 page 4to, Colonial Office stationery, very fine . "I HOPE YOU ARE NOT UNDULY SANGUINE IN YOUR BELIEF THAT OUR DIFFICULTIES ARE LARGELY SURMOUNTED." CHURCHILL LAMENTS LAWRENCE'S DEPARTURE FROM THE COLONIAL OFFICE The letter reads in full: "I very much regret your decision to quit our small group in the Middle East Department of the Colonial Office. Your help in all matters and your guidance in many has been invaluable to me & to your colleagues. I should have been glad if you have stayed with us longer. I hope you are not unduly sanguine in your belief that our difficulties are largely surmounted. Still, I feel I can count upon you at any time when a need may arise, & in the meanwhile I am glad to know that you will accept at least the honorary position of Adviser on Arabian Affairs." Churchill took Lawrence onto his team of Middle East advisors after the Great War, and Lawrence was instrumental in shaping the actions of the Cairo Conference, where Feisal was made King of Iraq, and his brother installed on the neighboring throne of Transjordan. Lawrence would later write: "In Winston's 1922 settlement of the Middle East the Arabs obtained all that in my opinion they had been promised by Great Britain."
