CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965)
[Collected Speeches. 1941-1948]
A set of Winston Churchill’s speeches, presented by the war-time Prime Minister to Anthony Eden in a special blue morocco binding. The set was probably presented to Eden by Churchill in two parts: the presentation inscription which is on the binder’s flyleaves in Into Battle is dated 1946, and finishes poignantly with ‘Journey’s End.’ Two following volumes of the set, The End of the Beginning and Onwards to Victory are uninscribed, but it seems likely Churchill presented them simultaneously with Into Battle, as the bindings have matching endpapers and headbands. The Unrelenting Struggle is uninscribed, but the endpapers and headbands match The Dawn of Liberation which has an authorial presentation inscription dated 1950 on the binder’s endpapers; since the remaining volumes all have authorial inscriptions (mostly dated 1950), and all appear on the binder’s endpapers, it seems most likely Churchill had this second part of the set bound for presentation in 1950. The exception is the volume of Secret Session Speeches which is the first American edition in publisher’s cloth, and is presented to Eden by Churchill in August 1946.
9 volumes, octavo (most 132 x 212mm), all first editions excepting those stated, and all bound in contemporary blue pebble-grained morocco with top edges gilt, excepting the last-named which is in publisher’s cloth (a couple of spines slightly faded, extremities lightly rubbed), comprising: Into Battle. London: 1941. 6th edition [i.e. impression] dated April 1941, with six-line quotation from Julian Grenfell’s poem ‘Into Battle’ appearing for the first time on the title. Woods A66(a) (incorrectly stating the appearance of Grenfell’s poem appears in the seventh edition). Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (authorial presentation inscription dated 1946, to:) – Anthony Eden. [With:] – The Unrelenting Struggle. London 1942. 2nd edition [i.e. impression] dated November 1942. Woods A89 (print runs quoted do not match the publication statement on the verso of the title). [With:] – The End of the Beginning. London: 1943. Woods A94. [With:] – Onwards to Victory. London: 1944. Woods A101. [With:] – The Dawn of Liberation. London: 1945. Woods A107. Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (authorial presentation inscription dated 1950, to:) – Anthony Eden. [With:] – Victory. London: London: 1946. Woods A112. Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (authorial presentation inscription dated 1950, to:) – Anthony Eden. [With:] – The Sinews of Peace. London: 1948. Woods A124. Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (initialled by the author ‘WSC’). [With:] – Europe Unite. London: 1950. Woods A128. Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (authorial presentation inscription dated 1950, to:) – Anthony Eden. [And:] – Secret Session Speeches. New York: 1946. First American edition. Woods A114. Provenance: Winston S. Churchill (authorial presentation inscription dated August 1946, to:) – Anthony Eden.
