"BEFORE ALAMEIN WE NEVER HAD A VICTORY, AFTER ALAMEIN WE NEVER HAD A DEFEAT" A wonderful memento from a festive night at the Albert Hall marking the fourth anniversary of Monty's victory over Rommel at El Alamein (23 October-2 November 1942). Both Montgomery's and Churchill's signature appear on the front endpaper. The program reprints Montgomery's stirring "Personal Message from the Army Commander on the eve of the Battle of Alamein... The battle which is now about to begin will be one of the decisive battles of history. It will be the turning point of the war...All that is necessary is that each one of us...should enter this battle with determination to see it through--to fight and to kill--and finally to win...." The festivities in 1946 featured keynote speeches by Montgomery and Churchill, renditions of "Lili Marlene" and other wartime songs by Doreen Harris, and an open bar. A British Pathé newsreel of the event survives, showing a thronged Hall and veterans mobbing Churchill when he arrives. In his memoirs Churchill would say, with some overstatement: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat." In Monty's speech at the Albert Hall in 1946, he says of his Eighth Army men: "We never lost a battle and we never gave up a yard of ground, ever." He concludes with words that brought a rousing cheer from his men: "After 8:30 the Order of the Day will be to get together and talk with your friends. I hope the beer will last out."
