CHURCHILL, Winston S. Typed letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), to Charles Goldsmith (1907-1998), Chartwell, Kent, 16 June 1957. 2 pages, 4to, Chartwell stationery, spike holes top left corner, carbon of Goldsmith's 18 June 1957 reply . CHURCHILL SIDESTEPS THE "BURNING MATTER" OF "THE COLOUR QUESTION IN AFRICA" and bails out of a film starring Rock Hudson and Sidney Poitier. Metro Goldwyn Mayer used a clip of Churchill speaking in his Chartwell study in the opening sequence of the film, "Something of Value," the story of a white Anglo (Rock Hudson) and a native Kenyan (Sidney Poitier) who grow up as friends, only to be fatally divided during the Mau Mau uprising. They also used a Churchill quote at the end of the film. "...Now that I have seen it," Churchill writes Goldsmith, the UK chairman of MGM, "I do not feel that I should be associated with it. I need not tell you what a burning matter in people's minds today through the world is the colour question in Africa, and at my time of life I have no wish to be drawn into the controversy..." Also present in the lot is an unsigned copy of Goldsmith's 18 June 1957 reply, regretfully bowing to Churchill's wishes. "It was a tremendous disappointment to us that you wish to dissociate yourself from the film..." Together 2 items .
