CHURCHILL SIDESTEPS THE "BURNING MATTER" OF "THE COLOUR QUESTION IN AFRICA" and bails out of a film starring Rock Hudson and Sidney Poitier. Metro Goldwyn Mayer used a clip of Churchill speaking in his Chartwell study in the opening sequence of the film, "Something of Value," the story of a white Anglo (Rock Hudson) and a native Kenyan (Sidney Poitier) who grow up as friends, only to be fatally divided during the Mau Mau uprising. They also used a Churchill quote at the end of the film. "...Now that I have seen it," Churchill writes Goldsmith, the UK chairman of MGM, "I do not feel that I should be associated with it. I need not tell you what a burning matter in people's minds today through the world is the colour question in Africa, and at my time of life I have no wish to be drawn into the controversy..." Also present in the lot is an unsigned copy of Goldsmith's 18 June 1957 reply, regretfully bowing to Churchill's wishes.
