Cicero, Marcus Tullius. M. T. Ciceronis Orationum volumen primum. (Venice: in the house of Aldo Manuzio & Andrea Torresano, January 1519)
The binding is illustrated in Tammaro de Marinis, La legatura artistica in Italia, no. 3000 and plate G7, where it is attributed to the papal binder of Julius III.
8vo (165 x 99 mm). Italic type, 31 lines plus headline. collation: *8 **4 a-z8 A-P8 Q4: 320 leaves (**4 and Q3-4 blank). Woodcut Aldine device on title-page, manuscript Latin verses on blank **4. (Without blank Q4, small stain and wormhole at upper corner of first few leaves, occasional damp-staining.)
binding: Contemporary Roman black morocco gilt (171 x 105 mm), interlacing gilt decoration with small leafy stamps, small fleurs-de-lys and a bird stamp, lettered on upper cover M.T.C. ORATIONUM VOLUMEN I, with motto SUAE QUISQUE (upper cover) FORTUNAE FABER (lower cover), spine with blind ruling and small flower stamp in each compartment, plain edges, stubs from four pairs of ties. (Spine and corners repaired, upper cover with repaired section at top left corner, later endpapers.)
provenance: Pompeius de Angelis (early inscription on title-page) — "Est Pauli de Grassis(?)" (early inscription at foot of title-page, crossed through) — S.
