(Antwerp 1599–1641 London) The Ecstasy of Saint Francis, oil on canvas, 112.5 x 84.5 cm, framed The present work is a version of Anthony van Dyck’s The Ecstasy of Saint Francis depicting the celebrated holy man of Assisi contemplating Christ’s death, as indicated by the skull. The prime version of this composition is conserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 510) and its setting showing a darkened wilderness alludes to the Saint’s stay on Mount La Verna where he received the stigmata. The present canvas omits some of the background present in the Vienna version and may have been slightly reduced in size, while its handling is not that of van Dyck, but a competent rendition of van Dyck’s style, suggestive of an artist in his circle.
