Beschreibung:

Property from a North American Private CollectionCircle of François BoucherAn allegory of painting oil on panelpanel: 10 1/4 by 13 3/4 in.; 26 by 34.8 cm.framed: 16 1/4 by 20 in.; 41.3 by 50.8 cm. ProvenanceAnonymous sale, London, Crhstie's, 18 May 1979, lot ?, as by Baudouin; With Dr. W. Katz, Bond St. (as attributed to Boucher); With Agnew’s, London, 1987; Anonymous sale, London, Christie’s, 19 April 1991, lot ? (in the printed catalogue as by Julien de Parme, with a sale room notice as by Noel Hallé); There acquired by Marcello Violante; New York, Sotheby's, January the ? 2006, lot ?, as ? ; With Noortman, Amsterdam, 2010 (as by Boucher); Anonymous sale, Zurich, Koller Auctions, 31 March 2011, lot 3110; There acquired by the present collector. ExhibitedPimlico, Chaucer Gallery, 1991 (as French School, c. 1765).Catalogue noteThe artist of this delightful sketch has continued to elude scholars, and it has been associated with a number of different artists in recent years. It is clear, however, that is inspired both in style and subject matter by François Boucher and likely comes from an artist working closely in his ambit. Another version of the composition is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille1 and though it was formerly attributed to Noël Hallé it is now catalogued as "attributed to Boucher." 1. See Catalogue Sommaire: II: Ecole française, Lille 2001, p. 45
