Self-portrait in a brown coat.
Oil on canvas. 28 3/4 x 24 inches (73 x 61 cm). Provenance: Sotheby's New York, 18 June 1974, lot 98, $4750; The Estate of Emily Fordyce Ewing; Mr. T. J. Blakeslee, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pulitzer; Arthur Ackermann and Sons, New York; Mrs. Elsie Fordyce Dodge; Mr. James W. Husted III. This portrait bears close comparison both in its dimensions and composition with the recently discovered (1998) self portrait acquired by the Yale Center for British Art. The Yale portrait had been lost since 1934. J Ward published a mezzotint of this painting in February 1807. The present picture had formerly been attributed to 'Sir Nathaniel Dance A Portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds". A miniature of this picture copied by his grand -daughter Anna Simpson (1807-1838) was sold by Christies on 11 April 1997.
