Circle of Michael Dahl,
Swedish 1659-1743-
Portrait of a young girl, standing half-length, wearing an orange shawl and holding a wreath;
oil on canvas, 79 x 66.2 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK (by descent).
Note:
Dahl lived and worked in England for much of his career where he enjoyed significant success as a portraitist, with his sitters including Queen Anne (1665-1714) and her husband Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708), alongside the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689).
Dahl completed a number of charming portraits of children much like the present work, such as his portrait of a girl, traditionally identified as Eleonora Leijoncrona, which was offered at Christie's, London, on 5 December 2012 (lot 211). The present work very much recalls Dahl's compositions and handling, particularly in the crisp depiction here of the fabric of the sitter's shawl.
