Florida: 1861-1862 Together 5 pencil drawings on paper, each captioned in pencil or ink, handsomely matted. Housed together in a cloth slipcase with folding chemise. 1) "Camp grounds of Col. W. Wilson's Zouaves, sketched after the Burning of the Tents by the Rebels on Oct. 9, 1861," (159 x 225 mm), on the verso of a regiment roll sheet, numbered "29" at upper right; a few scattered spots, adhesive residue to back. 2) "Hd Quarters 1st Brigade Grover's Division," (156 x 240 mm), numbered "47" at upper right, signed "C. F. Allgauer" lower right; a few vertical creases, adhesive residue to verso. 3) "Emancipation of the Troops on Santa Rosa Flor. May 10, 1862," (194 x 240 mm, mounted on a larger board); light toning, a few short tears at edges. 4) "Confederate Fleet consisting of steamers and about 8 or 10 sailing crafts ... Nov. 19 1861," (157 x 453 mm), on the verso of a regiment roll sheet, signed "C.F.A." lower right; some creasing and soiling, just splitting at folds, adhesive residue to back. 5) "Explosion of some shells 2 days after the Bombardment Nov. 22, 1861," (228 x 312 mm), on the verso of a regiment roll sheet, numbered "58 no. 4" at upper right, signed "C. F. Allgauer" lower right; signature faded, just splitting at folds, minor spotting, adhesive residue to verso. Charles F. Allgauer worked for Harper's Weekly during the first years of the Civil War, mainly covering the Florida area. In the present group, Allgauer records his environs in great detail — including the campgrounds and shipyards of Fort Pickens — but his drawing of "Explosion of some shells" following the Bombardment of Fort McRee is particularly evocative of the horrors of that war.
