The young Hanna enlisted in September of 1861 as a private. The following month he was mustered into the 13th Iowa, Co. G. The unit saw action at Shiloh, where it was under fire for 10 hours the first day. It was involved in the siege of Corinth, worked on repairing the road to Vicksburg, and was part of the force making a reconnaisance toward Mechanicsburg, "Crocker's Greyhounds." The unit was active throughout the war, but particularly in the spring and summer of 1864, it was involved in the campaign to take Atlanta. The diary in this lot is from that period, beginning 26 August. Most of the entries are standard movement notations, such as: moved Hd Qrs. at 11 am marched until 3 pm striking the main road at New Hope Church. Until the beginning of September, when the entries become longer. Sept. 1: this morning skirmishing is pretty heavy in our front ... fighting became general in our front at 2 pm and continued all afternoon until about 7 oclock, went to the pains of putting up a bunk to sleep in for the first time on the trip... Sept. 2: Got up with the sun after having an hours nap...marched about 11 miles harassing the Enemy's rear all the time. at 5 pm we went into camp close to where our forces wer in line of Battle, the Enemy having made a stand and fortified to some extent. Sept. 3: Everything is excitement this morning as we have just Rcd. the information officially that Atlanta is in our possession, the Enemy having evacuated in the night of the 1st. He goes on to say that not much happened the next few days, other than celebrations, until the 6th: Some French Gentleman having the title of soldier had the meanness to come to our Private Sanctum and Steal our Mess Box and all our Eating Utensils. We got up and done some considerable cussing but made out to borrow enough for our breakfast. I hope the man that took them may take a fit and die. And more... Although his official move to Field and Staff occurred just before the unit was mustered out, from notes in this diary, it seems as though Hanna was de facto field and staff, moving occasionally to the lines. He seems to have been well-educated, with better spelling than most privates in this conflict. Although the diary is a bit difficult to read because of small, close writing in pencil, at least he is literate. Condition:Several pages loose from diary, but present. Appointment and discharge moderately toned, with folds. Tintype of Hanna has mat abrasions and some emulsion loss, mostly in background. Tintype of Katie has rust spot on sho
