includes two swords, sword belt rig, signed 1904 "colonel retired" commission, two photo albums, a bible and Colt Model 1860 Army revolver. Revolver is .44 caliber, 8" round barrel, serial number 72295. Marked with a Colt barrel address, brass triggerguard and iron backstrap and walnut grips. Smith's Indian War M1860 Field and Staff sword having blade marked US Armory, Springfield, Mass. with brass hilt and folding guard ca 1870's. Worn nickel three-ring scabbard. Smith's Civil War Foot Officer's sword marked Ames MFG Chicopee, Mass. over U.S. JH 1861. Typical black leather scabbard with gilded brass fittings, upper mount marked Ames MFG. Co. with lower third broken and loose. The pair of family albums contain two CDV's of Smith, one a CDV size tintype ca 1865 and the other showing an older Major Smith in full dress uniform. The fold-over red leather bible bears a pencil inscription indicating that it was presented by Mrs. Capt. L. Smith to her father Thomas Allen on July 4, 1863. The unusual "colonel retired" commission still in original carboard tube is signed by President Theodore Roosevelt in his hand and dated May 23, 1904. Leslie Smith was an immigrant Irishman who enlisted in the army following the Mexican War in 1849 making sergeant in 1854. With the advent of the Civil War Smith was promoted from the ranks to 2nd lieutenant in the 1st US Infantry in April 1861. The 1st Infantry served in the western theater seeing early action at Wilson's Creek. The regiment was engaged during the advance on Corinth and the later battle in October 1862. The 1st bore a heavy role in operations leading up to Vicksburg, prominent in the seige and several assaults culminating in the capture of the fortress city. Afterwards, the regiment removed to New Orleans where it remained on provost duty until October 1865. Leslie Smith attained the rank of captain in 1862 and was breveted major for "meritorious service" in March 1865. Smith remained in the post war army and became lieutenant colonel of the 1st Infantry in October 1885. He retired in May 1889 after 40 years of distinguished military service. Condition: Colt Model 1860 Army overall G., uniformly brown with light pitting on barrel opposite cylinder. Cylinder is heavily pitted. Wedge damaged with screw missing. Action is weak. Walnut grips worn with shrinkage. M1860 S & F sword G+., nickel scabbard with wear and light pitting. M1850 Ames Foot Officer sword G.+ with wire missing on grip and broken leather scabbard. Belts near-relic.
