Manuscript diary of a Union private, Robert Fox "Pioneer Corps, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 20th Army Corps," kept during Sherman's Atlanta campaign and the March to the Sea, entries dated between 7 December 1863 -- 31 December 1864. 79 pages, 16mo, in ink in a blank book of 100 pages (probably hand-made by Fox, containing both plain and lined paper) bound in decorative dark maroon embossed cloth, wear at spine and extremities. A UNION SOLDIER IN SHERMAN'S GEORGIA CAMPAIGNS An very eventful war diary recording the marches, encampments and battles of a Brigade in Gen. Joseph Hooker's Corps under Sherman during the Atlanta campaign, the March to the Sea and the fall of Savannah. In his clear hand, Fox records his unit's actions at Rocky Face Ridge; Resaca ("reinforced the 4th Corps which was driven back...repulsed the Rebels and captured a Battery..."; May 15: "Our Corps charged on the Rebels and drove them out of their breastworks. And towards Evening we planted Capt Wheeler's Battery on the Skirmish line, and the rebel sharpshooters fired at us briskly and at Midnight the enemy attacked our 1st Division but...[Genl. Joe] Johnston with his whole army had to retreat..."); Cassville; Pumpkin Vine Creek; Alatoona ("...met the Rebels on Allatoona Mountain they were repulsed and Lt. H.W. Hitt...got killed, shot through the neck, I helped to bury him...We buried Col. Kilpatrick of the 5th Ohio who got killed by a grapeshot..."); Keneshaw Mountain; Peach Tree Creek ("the rebels attacked our Corps but they got repulsed after a few hours fighting"); Atlanta ("we marched within a 1/2 mile of the city...the rebels attacked General McPherson. A severe engagement took place, Gen. [James Birdseye] McPherson got killed...The rebels shelled us in the night...The rebels charged on General [O.O.] Howard..."). On September 2, Fox records simply that "Atlanta was taken by our troops"; and on 8 November, he records that he (along with many other Union soldiers) "put in a big vote for President Lincoln." But the next day "the rebels opened on our regt. with Artillery and they were repulsed with the loss of ten men." The balance records the march from Atlanta and the capture of Savannah on 21 December 1864; Fox's final entry, on 31 December reads "Adieu old year 1864."
