A 6 pp. letter from E A Moss of Winchester, Kentucky describing the division between Kentuckians who were loyal to the Union or Confederacy as well as a visit from General Morgan and his men to her town dated August 5, 1862. She described, Morgan and his men some two thousand has payed us a viset took all of the fine horses they could get and helped themselves out of the stores they paid for some of the goods some good mone and some Suther scrip which is no use here we was verry thankful they did not burn our town. Morgan had quite a battle at Cytheanna some good citizens was killed and good many of his men as killed. Although it is not certain which side Moss aligned herself with, it is apparent that everyone in Winchester feared Morgan. Upon hearing about his position, Old Miss Pool attempted to hide her silver from raiders. She forgot whare she put it and has not been able to find it yet though she has searched diligently, wrote Moss. Also included in the lot is an 30 pp. unpublished, typed copy of the 1862 diary of Corporal Bishop P. Pettibone, 95th Illinois Regiment Co. I, who was the recipient of the medal of silver, inscribed, "Champion's Hill, Vicksburg" in 1863. Condition: Typical folds of the letter with some smudges as well as slight fading of the ink. The typed journal is in fragile condition with a large hole at the bottom left corner, toning of the paper, and flaking of it as well.
