2pp., 8 x 12.5 in., Washington, DC, 14 Sept 1864. Legal agreement between the partnership of Thomas Corwin and John Jolliffe with William Lilley and Company. Corwin & Jolliffe will procure a permit that will allow Lilly to bring turpentine, pitch, rosen (rosin?) and cotton from the southern states, "now in rebellion," through federal lines to the north. Lilley will be entitled to 10% of the profit from the sale of these materials. Signed by Corwin, Jolliffe and Lilley. Thomas Corwin was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives and the U.S. House as well as the Senate. He was also Governor of Ohio (1840-1842), Secretary of the Treasury (1850-1853), and Ambassador to Mexico (1861-1864). He moved to Washington in 1864 after resigning his ambassadorial post and about the time this agreement was struck with Lilley. He died there the following year at the age of 71, but was buried in his Lebanon, Ohio hometown. John Jolliffe was Prosecuting Attorney of Clermont County, Ohio from 1833-1837. He was active in the anti-slavery movement and was part of the Clermont County Freedom Trail and noteworthy for defending fugitive slaves, including Margret Garner, who killed her daughter rather than have see her returned to slavery, and whose story still inspires literary works. O, Zouaves d'Afrique to assemble Oct. 8 at 8 o'clock, equipped and ready for inspection. Pieces of fringe from the 37th USCT flag (National) while they were assembled for inspection and photography. Broadside: Grand Opportunity for Ladies and Children! Pearson's Grand Historical Mirror of the War! at Mechanic Hall!...Exhibition Wednesday and Saturday Aftern's.... Plus 3pp Memorandum from the War Department, AG, Washington, 12 Oct. 1865. Regarding status of US Volunteers who were rebel deserters and POWs who signed oaths of allegiance and formed six regiments of infantry. Memo indicates where they were organized and when they mustered in. Condition: Letter affixed to heavy paper sheet at top. Moderate toning. Water stain lower left. Pencil note re: Jolliffe's biography on last page. Others variable, but some with extensive edge chipping.
