Lot of 3. Gillette, James (d. 1881). Captain, Commissary of Subsistence. ALS, 2pp, 7.75 x 9.75 in., "Aquia landing Va." April 27, 1863. Addressed to "Mr. Bonner / Editor Harper's Weekly," Gillette describes sketches that he has submitted to the publication, noting that they "were made under my own supervision by our division post master" and "are as accurate in detail as any I have seen." Accompanied by the following Civil War-era sketches, which are referenced in the letter: Pen and ink on paper, approx. 10.5 x 7 in. (sight), framed to 15 x 11.5 in. Unsigned landscape depicting a wartime river scene with steamers and sailing vessels, as well as a pier, in the middle distance, with a supply train and two soldiers visible in the foreground. Titled and inscribed below image: "Aquia Landing on the Potomac River Va. The main depot of Supplies for the Army of the Potomac." Pencil sketch titled, "Army Bakery in Charge of Capt. James Gillette Commissary of / Subsistence to Genl. Geary's Division." Condition: Light surface soil, with some smudging to inscription. Not examined outside frame.
