Sherman, William Tecumseh (1820-1891). Civil War general, Commanding General of the US Army, and US Secretary of War. Partially printed form, 1pp plus docketing, May 10, 1864. For "commutation of rations while on detached service as Mail Messenger at Headquarters Dept. & Army of the Tenn...." at Nashville, for Private David Crankshaw, Co. F, 49th IL Volunteers. Manuscript explanation notes: "...he was continually travelling on the Rail Road between Huntsville Ala. & Nashville Tenn. in charge of Military Mail." Approved and signed by "W.T. Sherman," Maj. Gen. Sherman had succeeded Grant as commander of the western theater by this point. May 1864 marked the beginning of the Atlanta Campaign, and around the 10th they were in the vicinity of Rocky Face Ridge and Resaca. Condition: Holes punched across lower fold, folds as expected. Minor scuffing along verso of folds, with separations beginning at same.
