Lot of 3, including: Bulford, John. ALS, 1 p, 7.75 x 12 in., "Camp Holt, District of Columbia." October 4, 1861. Addressed to Mr. John Irwin. Bulford served with Co. H, 13th Pennsylvania Regiment of Volunteers. He references the Washington, D.C. occupation, writing, "The Opinion here is that there is over Three Hundred Thousand Men Around the City. We do not know what day they are going to show the Rebells what we can and will do for this Union...We are getting closer and closer every day the opinion of some men here that ought to know say that there will be the heaviest fought battle before this Month Closes that has ever been fought..." Volumes 2 and 7 of A History of the Civil War by Benson J. Lossing, featuring reproductions of Mathew Brady's photographs. The Sun, Baltimore, MD: A. S. Abell & Co., April 15, 1865. Vol. LVI, No. 127. 4pp. 17 x 22.75 in. Possible souvenir printing. One article details of the meeting between Generals Grant and Lee at Appomattox to formally conclude the Civil War. Also includes the Oath of Allegiance and Parole to be sworn by citizens in the wake of the war. 20th century 8.5 x 6.5 in. printing of a photograph taken by Mathew Brady showing the Moore House in Yorktown, VA. The original image was taken after the Siege of 1862. With National Park Service handstamp on verso as well as penciled notations. The house is currently restored and operates as a museum. Modern photographs of the home, its historical marker, and the Auto Tour Companion describing the house are also included with the lot. Condition: Some fold separation in newspaper, A History of the Civil War volumes brittle with loose binding. Letter and prints in good condition.
