ALS, four 8" x 10" pages, lined paper. Nd, np. In this letter, Barton is defending her actions, although the event in question is unclear. I have committed no error as great(?) as to merit a personal reprimand, and be required to make an open denial before the world of the privileges I have assumed, the powers I have usurpted, the disrespect shown the Honored Heads of the Nation and my unavoidable and deep humiliations thereat... The letter must date after March 1901 (when Benjamin Harrison died), because she makes reference to Grover Cleveland as "our only surviving past President," and to twenty years of Red Cross service (the original charter signed in 1881). What is unclear is whether it is addressed to McKinley (d. Sept 1901) or Roosevelt. She makes reference to relief for an entire and direful contest of nations, and of which none better than your own honored self knows the hardships. McKinley served in the Civil War, and Roosevelt, of course, in the Spanish-American War, in which the Red Cross was very involved in relief efforts. Condition: Paper toned, a bit brittle, old cellophane tape repairs on verso of all folds, with adhesive bleeding through to front. Minor chips along edges. The ink has not faded or burned through the paper.
