THE FIRST SUBSTANTIVE REPORT FROM THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION, preceded by its printing the previous day in the Baltimore Telegraphe and Daily Advertiser . Both printings are EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE: according to American Book Prices Current , no copies of either contemporary newspaper printing have appeared at auction in at least 30 years. Clark's letter, written at Fort Mandan, contains his summary view of the journey up the Missouri. Totalling some 800 words, the letter gives detailed geographical data as well as relates encounters with native tribes along the way. The letter is reprinted in Donald Jackson, Letters of the Lewis and Clark Expedition with related Documents 1783-1854 , Urbana, 1978 (2nd ed.), no. 146, pp. 227-230. Not in Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition .
