Jones, 4 engraved Indian portrait plates (map with a few repaired tears affecting several letters). (Some scattered pale foxing.) Contemporary mottled calf, morocco lettering piece (some repairs to spine). FIRST EDITION OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK "APOCRYPHA", including printings of President Jefferson's Message... Communicating Discoveries of 1806, letters of William Clark and plagiarized portions of the journals of Jonathan Carver, Patrick Gass and Alexander Mackenzie Wheat calls the map, the only original contribution in this work, "the earliest published map with legends stemming from Lewis and Clark." Clark's letter to Harrison original appeared in the the Baltimore Telegraphe and Daily Advertiser on 25 July 1805, and then in The National Intelligencer, and Washington Advertiser on the following day (see lot 40). The Lester anthology of previously printed works was the "first in a long and mostly related series of unauthorized published accounts of the expedition" and remained one of the main sources of information about the West until the official publication of the Lewis and Clark narrative in 1814 ( Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition 4a.1).
