This letter was published in the Washington Daily National Intelligencer, on December 30, 1847, but the addressee was not identified. In their similar speeches, Clay and Gallatin argue that the U.S. was responsible for starting the hostilities on the Texas-Mexico boundary that lead to the Mexican-American War, which claimed the life of Henry Clay Junior earlier in 1847.
