(Clemens Family) A group of 7 documents signed and accomplished relating to deaths and funerals in the Clemens family, 1904–1910: S. L. Clemens. Acknowledgment, Florence, Italy, June 1904. Printed 9-line acknowledgement of messages of condolence received at the time of Livy Clemens's death, signed "S. L. Clemens" and annotated in Clemens's hand at the bottom: "You have said the true word: | I did worship her. SLC,"; full signature faded. — S. L. Clemens. Autograph sentiment signed "S. L. Clemens," on Brown's Hotel stationery, London, n.d [after June 1904], reading: "I have not known & shall never know any one who could fill the place of the wife I have lost. I shall not marry again"; light staining near center fold. — S. L. Clemens. Typed document signed ("O.K. | SLC"), Redding, Connecticut, 30 March 1909; light marginal toning. — S. L. Clemens. Printed document accomplished in a secretarial hand and signed ("Samuel L. Clemens"), n.p., 17 April 1909, being a Proxy for the Plasmon Milk Products Company. — S. L. Clemens. Autograph note signed ("S. L. Clemens"), Stormfield, New York, 26 December [1909], being the draft of the acknowledgement of condolences on the occasion of Jean's sudden death on 24 December 1909: "To all friends who have expressed sympathy for me in my bereavement I offer my sincerest gratitude." Provenance: Victor & Irene Murr Jacobs (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996, lot 322) — (S. L. Clemens). Typed document signed by Clemens's secretary Isabel V. Lyon (I. V. Lyon"), being a receipt dated 26 April 1906, for stocks and bonds belonging to Clemens. — (Jean and S. L. Clemens). Funeral Register of Smith & Fudge Funeral Home, tall folio, Elmira, New York, 1909–1911, containing entries for the funerals of Jean Clemens (p. 36) and S. L. Clemens (p. 87). Together with: Certificate of the Registrar of Deaths for S. L. Clemens, original funeral record of his granddaughter Nina Clemens Gabrilowitsch, 12 photographs of the funeral home and a stable, a photograph of undertaker Philip B. Smith, 2 newspaper clippings, photocopies of an acknowledgement card from Clara Clemens to her cousin Mary Moffett and letter, dated 1910, and a photocopy of S. L. Clemens's will, dated 17 August 1908. The archive and register housed in a red cloth chemise.
