Small 4to, blue morocco, covers with double gilt fillet, FRONT COVER SET WITH AN OVAL PORTAIT MINIATURE OF CLEMENS, framed with a border of gilt floral tools, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two compartments, a repeated gilt-tooled ornamental panel in the rest, board edges and turn-ins gilt-tooled, blue watered silk doublures and free endpages, g.e., ORIGINAL PICTORIAL BLUE CLOTH COVERS bound-in at rear, stamp-signed by the binders on the upper turn-in: "Bound by Bayntun (Riviere), Bath, England," front cover and spine somewhat faded; silk endpages a little faded, front hinge cracked with first few pages loose, Explanatory leaf detached and chipped at edges, frontispiece rubbed and chipped along fore-margin; cloth slipcase. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION IN THE RARER BLUE CLOTH BINDING, with the early issue points: "was" for "saw" on p. 57, the "Him and another Man" plate listed as being on p. 88; state "1(2?)" of pagination on folio 155 with the final "5" lacking; the title-leaf a cancel; state 3 of p. 283 (on a stub); the frontispiece in first state; the final leaf blank.
