COCKBURN The firm Cockburn Wauchope & Co. was established in 1815 by George Wauchope and Robert Cockburn, who were joined by Captain William Greig in 1828 when the company was renamed Cockburn Wauchope & Greig. Cockburn’s owns some outstanding vineyards in the Douro Valley, including their Quinta dos Canais vineyard which they acquired in 1989 which they occasionally bottle as a Single-Quinta Vintage Port. The wine-making is conducted by a team consisting of Jim Reader, assisted by Miguel Corte Real, one of the best viticulturalists in Portugal who was responsible for the reintroduction of Touriga Nacional to the Douro in 1970. Cockburn’s allows fermentation to proceed for slightly longer than most other houses, which produces a less sweet style of port.
