ALS re Lord Salisbury, Pena and Sandhurst in Bombay, etc. w/ 1881 Vanity Fair chromolithograph “Mufti.” (3) General Sir William Francis Butler GCB, PC (1838–1910) British Army officer, writer, and adventurer. Sgd cacheted Envelope, w/ Vanity Fair chromolithograph. “A Radical General.” (4) Field Marshall Sir Frederick Paul Haines GCB GCSI CIE (1819–1909) Fought in First and Second Anglo-Sikh Wars, Crimean War, Indian Rebellion, Quartermaster-General to the Forces in the U.K. Commander-in-Chief in India. Crown Equerry to Queen Victoria, and Edward VII (took part in his coronation) Sgd card dated Jan. 27, 1902, w/ 1881 Vanity Fair chromolithograph “Cropy” (12) Major General Sir Geoffrey Barton, KCVO, CB, CMG, KStJ (1844–1922) Served in Ireland, Hong Kong and India, but mostly African. Commander 6th Brigade of the South Natal Field Force in Second Boer War, taking part in the Relief of Ladysmith and the Relief of Mafeking. Sgd letter closing “G. Butler, Major General, Comdg. Fusilier Brigade, South Africa” w/ photogravure print “Major-General G. Barton, C.B. Commanding the Sixth Infantry Brigade.” (13) Lieutenant General Sir Edward Cecil Bethune, KCB, CVO (1855–1930) Led Bethune's Mounted Infantry in the Second Boer War and directed the Territorials in WW1. ALS, Thanking hosts on behalf of himself and staff of “terriers” for his stay. w/ photo print “Lt. Colonel E. C. Bethune” Commanding Bethune’s mounted Infantry. (14) General Sir James Hope Grant GCB (1808–75), Served in the First Anglo-Chinese War, First Anglo-Sikh War, Indian Mutiny of 1857, and Second Anglo-Chinese War. Closing signature from April 30, 1879 letter. w/ March 1875 portrait from the Illustrated London News (issued upon his death) (15) General Sir Bindon Blood, GCB, GCVO (1842–1940) Served in Egypt, Afghanistan, India, and South Africa. Chief Royal Engineer. Winston Churchill served under him and dedicated to him his book “The Story of the Malakand Field Force” (1898). 1908 ALS Declines to write a book on the North West Frontier because a thorny subject and he kept no notes, etc.
