Beschreibung:

A collection of items from the estate of the educator Yona Cohen, one of the founders of "Horev" school in Jerusalem and its first principal – songs in honor of his wedding and songs for weddings and other events, letters, handwritten notebooks and leaves. [Germany and Palestine, ca. 1920s-30s]. * About 20 songs and short plays composed for weddings and Bar-Mitzvahs, in German and Hebrew (some are typewritten and some are written by hand); most are from the 1930s. Among them: songs for the wedding of Yona Cohen and Simcha Bodenheimer (among them a song written by hand, in Hebrew, signed: "Mordechai Breir"; a song in honor of Yona Cohen based on the Book of Esther [printed in German, with sentences in Hebrew]; and more); songs for the Bar-Mitzvah of Leo Jehudah Zucker, a song in honor of the Bar-Mitzvah of Raphael Cohen, a song in honor of the wedding of Jakob Kahn and Hanna Cohn, and more. Most of the items are filed in a paper folder, on the front of which appears the writing: "Songs and plays for our wedding and for the wedding of Jakob and Hanna Kahn". * Two handwritten notebooks (German) from the years 1923-1925. On the front cover of the notebooks appear paper labels of "Talmud Torah Realschule" (Talmud Torah school) in Hamburg, with Cohen's name written on them by hand. * More items from the estate of Cohen, including handwritten leaves, letters to him, and more. Yona Cohen (1907-1990) was born in Hamburg, Germany, to an orthodox family. As a child he studied in "Talmud Torah Realschule" (the only Jewish school for boys in Hamburg), and later in Rabbi Yossef Karlebach's Yeshivah. Later on he studied education and worked as a teacher. While working as a teacher he also served as the coordinator of "Ezra" – Haredi youth movement – in Hamburg. When the Nazis rose to power in Germany, he was fired and immigrated to Palestine. Upon his arrival in Palestine, in 1934, Cohen started working as a teacher and was one of the founders of "Horev" school – a school based on the ideal of Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch, "Torah Im Derech Eretz" (Torah with "the way of the land"), combining holy studies with secular ones. Cohen was the first principal of the school that over the years turned to be a chain of religious-national educational institutes including elementary school, a high-school Yeshivah (including a Kolel) and a school for girls. Concurrently with his role as a principal, Cohen was also involved in teaching history, bible and civics. Cohen led the "Horev" institutes until 1960. In 1981 he was awarded the title "Cherished Citizen of Jerusalem" for his life-long educational endeavors. Total of 35 items. Size and condition vary.
