COLLIGNON, Franois (1609?-1657?). L'Isola d'Elba . [Rome: second quarter of the 17th century]. Engraved map of the island of Elba, 400 x 550mm (engraving 300 x 350mm. The title set in a decorative strapwork cartouche, the seas decorated with galleons and a barge, Porto Ferraio and Porto Longone shown in bird's-eye perspective. (Trimmed to image and window-mounted, some light spotting and staining.) This fine map of Elba includes the island of Pianosa as well as the mainland peninsula of Piombino with its port. An engraver from Nancy active in Paris and Rome, and pupil of Jacques Callot (1592-1635), Collignon made a series of 12 views of the countryside surrounding Florence. These view have often been mistaken for the work of his master. He also engraved views of buildings put up by pope Sixtus V (Felice Peretti), and a view of Malta with its fortresses. Watermark star above a crown in a circle. [ With :] ANONYMOUS. Elba Isola olim Ilva . No imprint: [first half of the 17th century]. Engraved map of the island of Elba, 190 x 280mm. The title set in an oval strapwork cartouche, scalebar set in a strapwork cartouche, the sea decorated with ships, Porto Ferraio shown in bird's-eye perspective. (Trimmed to image and window-mounted.) A fine view of Elba. Porto Ferraio, in the centre of the North coast, is both the capital and a natural harbour of the island; it was built and founded by Cosimo I Medici, who gave it the name Cosmopolis, which later changed to Porto Ferraio. The British Library map room lists only five earlier separately issued maps of Elba, three of which are tentatively dated and could well be contemporary with this map. Not in Tooley. (2)
