Title: Color lithograph advertising poster for the B.F. Goodrich's ''Haskell White Streak Golf Ball'' Author: Anderson, William Law Place: Akron, OH Publisher: B.F. Goodrich Date: [c.1910] Description: Strikingly bright color lithograph advertising poster, featuring Willie Anderson, with a copy of his Oct. 1, 1909 letter to B.F. Goodrich, praising their Haskell White Streak Golf Ball, which he used in winning the Western Open Championship at the Skokie Country Club in September 1909. Measures 21x13" double matted and framed; (28¼x20¼" overall). Not examined outside of frame. Labels from the Cambridge Golf Antiquities Ltd (Pebble Beach), on the paper backing. Anderson (1879-1910) won four U.S. Opens (1901, 1903-05) and four Western Opens (1902, 1904, 1908-09) and the Southern California Open in 1899 (which was the first attempt to organize a State Championship, played over 36 holes). He is the only player to win the US Open using two different balls, the gutta percha and the rubber core. It has been said that Anderson at his best, was as good as either Walter Hagen or Bobby Jones Anderson's accuracy was legendary particularly with his favorite club the mashie, equivalent to the present day five iron. Willie Anderson was the professional at ten clubs in fourteen years, including Pittsfield, Apawamis, Onwentsia, and St Louis Country Clubs. In 1898 he was the first pro at Baltusrol in New Jersey, site of the 1903 U.S. Open. He became the first two-time winner (and later three time and four time winner) of the Western Open. Since the U.S. Open debuted in 1895, nobody else has ever accomplished that hat-trick (three wins in a row) and his record of four victories is shared only with Bobby Jones Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus (nobody has won more yet). Willie played in 14 straight Open's, finishing each time no less then 15th (mostly in the top three). Anderson was the first great player to emerge in the U.S. but no one is sure just how great, since balls, clubs and the condition of courses were below today's standard. He died at the young age of 31 from arteriosclerosis. Anderson was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame in 1975. Lot Amendments Condition: Occasional light wear, about fine. Clean and bright; extremely rare! Item number: 154585
