COLOR PLATE] MASON, GEORGE HENRY The Costume of China . London: W. Miller, 1806. Later issue, with plates on Whatman paper with an 1808 watermark. Contemporary purple straight-grain morocco gilt. 12 3/4 inches (33 cm); title in French and English on 2 ff., 4 ff. preface, 2 ff. plate lists; with 60 superb hand-colored aquatint plates after Pu-Qua of Canton, each with accompanying text leaf. Some scuffing to binding, but a sound copy; Together with a group of twenty-six extremely fine watercolors on laid paper of Chinese trades. Each sheet is approximately 12 x 18 inches (31 x 46 cm), a heavy laid paper without watermark; the watercolors are titled in ink in German at the foot, and most bear small slips with the subject title in Chinese. Eight of the compositions are extremely close in design to the aquatints in Mason's book. It is unclear whether Pu-Qua's designs in Mason's books derive from these drawings, these from the plates in Mason, or both from a common source. In any case, early watercolors of Chinese trades of this quality are extremely uncommon. Estate of a New York Gentleman
