Abrahami Patriarchae Peregrination Et Vita - "The Life and Wanderings of Abraham the Patriarch", hand-colored copperplate engraving. [Antwerp, ca. 1590]. Cartographer: Abraham Ortelius The map depicts the land of Canaan and part of Egypt; it points to the north. Surrounding the map are 22 medallions with depictions of scenes from the life of Abraham, the expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael and the binding of Isaac. Underneath the cartouche on the right are three bar scales representing three different measuring methods. The engraving appeared in Ortelius's book Additamentum IV Theatri Orbis Terrarum. The present map has no text on verso. According to Laor 547, it may be a proof or an etching sold individually prior to 1590. Sheet approx. 36X46 cm, in a 71X60 cm frame. Good condition. Folding marks and creases. Slight defects. Unexamined out of frame.
