Accompanied by Descriptions Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, by Richard Swainson Fisher, M.D. Author: Colton, George W. Place: New York Publisher: J.H. Colton & Co. Date: 1857 Description: With 57 lithographed maps (all but 1 hand-colored; 4 are double-page); 1 inserted color lithographed advertising leaf; & 56 full-page advertisements in black & white (some pages advertising more than 1 firm), on the backs of text leaves or maps, engraved and printed advertisements on blue-coated endpapers front and rear. (folio) 18¼x15¾, gilt-pictorial cloth imprinted “Colton’s Advertising Atlas of America” on front cover, original black morocco spine with gilt title. Colton’s rare advertising atlas, featuring ads for numerous American companies, and highlighted by the spectacular color lithographed advertisement for Allsopp’s East India Pale Ale, lithographed by Day & Son in London; Arthur Kendall in New York was the U.S. Agent for the beer. Other advertisements, most of which are illustrated, include Chilson’s New Cone Furnace; Richard Kingsland Looking Glasses and Picture Frames; Robers Brothers Silver and Gold Plated Wares; New York and Liverpool United States Mail Steamers; Persse & Brooks’ Paper Works, Windsor Locks, Connecticut (with a half-page engraving of the mill); Mason & Hamlin, Manufacturers of Melodeons; Organ-Melodeons, and Organ Harmoniums; Allan Hay & Co. Soap and Candle Works; W.B. Douglas Patent Yard Pumps; and many more. The maps include double-page spreads of the United States, New York and Texas; the various states singly or by region; America south of the border; etc. Lot Amendments Condition: Lacking vignette title page; spine worn with loss to spine ends and joints; front cover with a few old splash stains; double-page map of the United States slightly worn at bottom edge where projecting below boards (bound in a bit crooked); a few numerical notes in right margin of Texas map; occasional offsetting from advertisements, overall contents near fine and covers good to very good.
