Strassburg: Bartholomaeus Kistler, 30 September 1497 [i.e. London: mid-19th century facsimile by John Harris]. 4 o (206 x 144 mm). Woodcut illustration on first and last leaf. (Lacking the final blank.) 19th-century brown morocco gilt. Provenance : James Lorimer Graham, Century Association (bookplate, his sale, Christie's New York, 11 June 1982, lot 424). The John Harris (1791-1873) facsimile of the German translation of the first Columbus letter. "Five copies of this extremely rare tract were made by the elder Mr. Harris with such exactness, that it requires an expert to detect it from the original" (Sabin). "Mr Harris is not so much distinguished as an artist as he is famous for his wonderful facsimile reproductions of early wood-engraving and block-printing to supply deficiencies in imperfect books" (Cowtan Memories of the British Museum London, 1872).
