Combes, Simon
Stories and Art from a World Traveller - GREAT CATS.
Published: The Greenwich Workshop Press, Shelton. Conn. USA, 1998
Edition: First Edition
In 1993, adventurer, artist and author Simon Combes embarked on the greatest adventure of his lifetime: a search for nine great cats of the world. His goal was to research, locate and ultimately paint each cat in the glory of its natural habitat. In a sometimes hair-raising, sometimes hysterical account of his voyages over three years and on three continents, Combes captures, in stories, paintings and photos, the drama of these nine mysterious and largely elusive species of the cat family. Great Cats reads like a late-twentieth-century Indiana Jones thriller: Simon, lost in a blizzard while crossing the Altai Mountains of Mongolia, air-lifted into the jungles of Venezuela, sketching Bengal tigers in India from a howdah atop a swaying elephant. He ventures to Thailand for the clouded leopard and to the Serengeti Plains of Africa for the lion and searches for cougars in northern Idaho with Maurice Hornocker from the Wildlife Institute. Combe's reverence, however is largely restricted to the animals and native peoples. His human companions and occasional fellow travellers fare less well under his observant and comical eye. Filled with travel lore and local customs, Great Cats is a rip-roaring illustrated adventure. Working with foremost experts for each species, Simon accurately paints both the animal and its habitat in stunning detail. Featured in this volume are nine cat paintings, in addition to Simon's spectacular photography and sketches from his journals. Central to his story is the chilling reminder that the most vicious enemy to these species is not poaching, but the dwindling habitat due to human expansion. Hardback with unclipped dustcover over original grey illustrated boards with illustrated endpapers. Half Title. Illustrations. Title-Frontispiece. Contents. Prologue. 168 pages text with stunning illustrations throughout. Very Good. ISBN 0867130482 Jacket Condition: Very Good Binding Condition: Very Good Overall Condition: Very Good Size: 28.5 x 26 cm
