Title: Complete run of Book Club of California annual keepsakes from 1934 to 2003, plus a short run of quarterly newsletters Author: ** Place: San Francisco Publisher: Book Club of California Date: 1934-2004 Description: A complete run of 120 annual keepsake slipcase volumes with chemises, each containing several individual keepsake booklet issues. Years include: 1934-42; 1946-2003. Note: there were no keepsakes produced in 1943 to 1945 (due to the war effort), making this a complete run. Some are duplicates, with: two for 1934, 36, 38-40, 42, 48, 52, 55, 57-60, 63-66, 68-69, 71, 73-79; three for 1937, 41, 49, 51, 53, 61; four for 1946, 50, 70, 72, 80-82; and five for 1954. Mix of slipcase bindings: quarter leather & cloth, quarter faux leather & cloth, and regular full cloth (many of the earlier years with the quarter leather), with gilt-lettered spine labels. Approximately 10½x7”. * Also, 14 quarterly newsletter slipcase volumes (each faux quarter blue leather & cloth, gilt-lettered spine labels), 13 of which contain the original chemises and newsletters (Volume 68-69, 2002-04 slipcase is empty). Volumes 44-67, 70-71; 1978-2006 (but latter or final volume with Winter 2004 newsletter only). Contains an additional 21 individual loose issues from 1977-2003; Index for Volumes 31-40 (1965-75), wrapper-bound; and Second Reading: Selections from the Quarterly News-Letter, 1933-1963, compiled by Oscar Lewis, linen-backed boards, 1965. * Plus, a few more miscellaneous booklets and loose related paper items, including: California Printing, Part Three, 1987; Charles & Kathleen Norris, prospectus, 1993; Albert Sperisen, 1908-1999; Dear Master: Letters of George Sterling to Ambrose Bierce, 2002, etc. Together, 134 slipcased volumes containing numerous keepsakes and newsletters, plus some loose individual issues and items, from the Book Club of California. A significant collection representing some of the most important writings, publications, art work and other areas of fine printing in California and the West. Includes: Letters of Western Authors, California Literary Pamphlets and Short Stories, California Mining Towns, Trails and Mountain Passes, Pacific Adventures, A Camera in the Gold Rush, Playbills, Stock Certificates, Clipper Cards, Early Transportation in Southern California, Firehouses, Homes, Theatres, Camps, Wayside Inns, Printing and Fine Binding, Sheet Music, California Trade Cards, etc., etc. Most appear to be complete containing all keepsakes issued for those particular years; however, a few apparently lacking individual issues.
