CDV portrait identified verso as Sam Rice / Confederate army / brother of Daisy Rice / my great g'mother, and includes a Sarony, New York backmark. Samuel Rice wears a Confederate uniform with blue trim, which indicates that he was a lieutenant of infantry, and he holds a model 1851 foot officer's sword, possibly presentation, across his lap. Both images recently surfaced in New York City. Research indicates that there are only two listed lieutenants of infantry in the Confederate Army named Samuel Rice (no middle initial), including the following: Samuel Rice, 1st Lieutenant, Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry; and Samuel Rice, 1st Lieutenant, Co. H, 2nd Missouri Infantry. Given the proximity of New York, where the cdv copy was made, the principle of parsimony suggests this image is of the Virginian. The 27th Virginia Infantry, along with the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 33rd Virginia Infantry regiments, were organized into a brigade at the outset of the war under the command of Thomas Jonathan Jackson, and won accolades at 1st Manassas, and became the Stonewall Brigade. Although decimated by the end of the war, the 27th Virginia remained in this organization until the end of the conflict. The 2nd Missouri saw action at Bayou Fourche and had duty operating against guerillas throughout Alabama and Georgia.
