Lot of 3 letters written by Samuel C. Clyde, 2nd South Carolina Volunteers, addressed to Hattie Crook, with whom he was in love (see Lot 133, CSA Major William J. Crook letters also addressed to Hattie Crook). Smith's Farm, Chickahominy River, VA, June 3, 1862. 6pp (approx. 6 x 8 in.). They were called to support the troops in the battle (Seven Pines?), but not called until late in the day. "...The Yankees were driven back several miles. Their breastworks & batteries successfully charged. all the Artillery they had in the engagement (twenty eight pieces in all) were taken, their camp & equipage, besides a large amount of provisions, army stoves &c. fell into our hands, ambulances, knapsacks, overcoats, & other articles too numerous to mention were taken by our troops. Between five hundred & a thousand prisoners were also taken & are now safely caged in Richmond." Camp near Martinsburg, VA, September 22, 1862. 4pp (approx. 6 x 8 in.). "I shall not attempt a description of our trip into Maryland as I have not time nor space to do so. Suffice it for the present to say that it paid us remarkably well. The capture of Harpers Ferry was a grand & glorious affair; I suppose you have heard ere this of its fall. I will mention for your own satisfaction some of the fruits of that victory. Between twelve and fifteen thousand prisoners fell into our hands, also two or three thousand Contrabands, forty seven pieces of fine Artillery, thousands of stands of small arms, wagons & horses by the hundreds & provisions in great abundance. In fact it is one of the greatest achievements of the war." He goes on to tell her that only by marching quickly for a day and night were they able to escape the Union troops that came in support of their compatriots. Camp Near Gordonsville, VA, April 28, 1864. 6pp (5.75 x 9 in.). After telling Hattie that he had arrived at camp safely, albeit with a short delay, he notes that they have full rations these days, including one cup of real coffee each day. "The troops are all in excellent spirits, and eager for the fray. Gen. Grants glory will soon vanish away, and the great name buried along with those of his unfortunate predecessors.... I firmly believe God will give us the victory. I believe He will crown our efforts with success, and drive our enemies before us as chaff before the wind. And why do I thus believe? why am I this confident? Simply because very many of our brave defenders are enlisting under the 'blood stained banner of the Cross of the Captain of our salvation.' The Christian soldier is spraying, the ministers of God are laboring, in short the followers of the Lord Jesus are engaged in a mighty struggle with Satan and his wicked legions..." Near the end, he asks her to destroy any of his letters "that may contain too much outspoken affection...I was actuated by the purest motives, but perhaps acted unwisely..." With copy of Wyckoff, Mac. A History of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry: 1861-65. Fredericksburg (VA): Sergeant Kirkland's Museum and Historical Society, Inc., 1994. First ed. 8vo, printed paper over boards, 278pp. The 2nd South Carolina was authorized on January 7, 1861, shortly after South Carolina seceded. The 2nd was formed by Joseph Brevard Kershaw before war was declared. They were mustered into state service April 9th, and Beauregard began bombarding Fort Sumter on the 12th. Kershaw took them to Richmond and in late May, they were mustered into Confederate service with a full complement of ten companies. It was mustered out April 9, 1865 at Smithfield, NC. Condition: Areas of toning. Folds as expected.
