CONRAD, JOSEPH. Autograph letter signed ("J. Conrad") to Lady Sidney Colvin, Oswalds, Bishopsbourne, Kent, 15 June 1924, 2 pages, small 4to, very slight soiling along central horizontal fold , a very late letter written some seven weeks before his death (on 3 August) regarding his wife Jessie's operation on 13 June: "...I am happy to be able to say that the surgeons have found (and removed) what was probably the cause of 90 of the horrid trouble. There are good grounds to hope that the years of pain are at an end for that patient woman...She had a fairly good night and is reported as 'looking cheerful.' I am going to see her now..."--SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. Autograph letter signed ("G. Bernard Shaw") to Madame Jules Magny (wife of a fellow Fabian), [place indecipherable], 2 January 1899, 2 pages, small 12mo, on stiff card , a get-well message: "I have only just heard from Jules that you have followed my bad example and got into the hands of the surgeons. However, here I am after it all better than ever, and I shall presently find you at New [Cross?] completely re-established...if you should see a student at the hospital with a beautiful head of red hair, ask him is his name Haden Guest & tell him I told you to claim his best attention. He is a Fabian, & can at least amuse you by talking..."--GALSWORTHY, JOHN. Autograph letter signed to "Dear Mr. Mannering," Wingstone, Manaton, Devon, 11 September n.y. [1912?], 1 1/2 pages, 4to : "...I will give you permission to play Justice and The Silver Box on the same terms as The Pigeon in any town that has not either a Repertory theatre, or a scheme for Repertory, in hand. I except also Oxford and Cambridge, and of course London. This permission to last to August 31, 1913..." (Maxwell) (3)
