CONRAD, JOSEPH. Youth: a Narrative and Two Other Stories. Edinburgh and London: Blackwood 1902. 8vo, original light green cloth, spine slightly darkened, green half morocco gilt folding case . FIRST EDITION, 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "10/02" at end, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Conrad on the front free endpaper: "To Miss H. Capes with the Author's kind regards. 20 Nov. 1902" (publication date was 13 November). Smith 8; Connolly, The Modern Movement , 14. The recipient, Harriet Capes, was a good friend of Conrad's; in 1908 he dedicated A Set of Six to her. She later edited the selection Wisdom and Beauty from Conrad (1915). The "two other stories" in this book are "Heart of Darkness" and "The End of the Tether" (the first book appearance for both). Bookplate of Harriet Capes.
