Beschreibung:

CONSECRATION OF A BISHOP, with other Pontifical texts, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Germany, 1538 and 18th century]360 x 280mm. 58 leaves, 24 lines written in black ink in a gothic bookhand between two faintly ruled verticals, justification: 240 x 145mm, headings and additions in margins, extensive rubrics in red, text capitals touched red, one- and two-line initials alternately red or blue, two large initials in red and blue or blue, title with extensive strapwork flourishing, ff.3-21; 29 lines written in black ink in an 18th-century hand between two verticals ruled in brown, with musical notation on staves of two or four lines, justification: 260 approx. x 146 mm, rubrics in red, ff.23-46 (rubrics faded in later section where some leaves pasted over to carry corrected texts). Contemporary brown calf over pasteboard blind-stamped with panels and bands of antique decoration with title CONSECRATIO EPISCOPI on upper cover (restored and worn). PROVENANCE: The binding may be south German in origin and the book was presumably written to celebrate a particular consecration. The added texts refer to a specific cathedral, perhaps Mainz, since altars of St Alban and St Margaret are mentioned in the rites for Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday, ff.23, 27v. CONTENT: Title Consecratio episcopi f.2, Mass for the consecration of a bishop ff.3-5, rite for the consecration of a bishop, dated 1538 at end, ff.6-21; pontifical texts for Holy Week ff.23-43; prayers for vesting in full pontificals ff.44-46; ff.47-58 blank.
