COOKE, George (1781-1834). Scenery of the East India Islands, etc. A Series of Views of the most Remarkable Localities, celebrated for Picturesque Beauty or Historical and Other Associations . London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Browne, [plates dated 1811-1813]. Oblong 2° (205 x 270 mm). 26 engraved plates by George Cooke and L. Byrne, after original drawings by W. Alexander and E.H. Locker. (Some plates with faint vertical stain touching sky area.) Blue morocco gilt by Bayntun Riviere, with original wrappers bound in (a few light stains to upper wrapper and lower cover). Provenance : Christie's, 24 November 1982, lot 236. A RARE SET OF ENGRAVINGS AFTER EARLY VIEWS OF THE PACIFIC, several taken from the third voyage of James Cook The fine impressions include an early View of Sydney and the Mouth of the Parramatta , after an original drawing by Charles Alexandre Lesueur now in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle du Havre Collection (16063-1), and published in F. Péron's Voyage of 1807, and a view of the town of St James in St Helena, with ships from the East India Company entering the bay in the foreground.
