COOPER, James Fenimore]. The Pathfinder: or, The Inland Sea . Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1840. First American edition , the imprints in BAL's state 1 (2?--priority not established), and without copyright notice in vol. 1 (present in vol. 2). The American edition was preceded by the English edition (London: Richard Bentley by about a month. An extremely fine copy of the fourth book in Cooper's well-known series of five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales . 2 volumes, 12mo. (Stain on upper margin of title-page vol. 1 from attempted signature removal; some minor foxing as usual.) Original purple muslin, printed paper labels on spines; cloth slipcase. Provenance: Peter Schermerhorn (1781-1852), wealthy and prominent New York merchant and banker ship chandler and a Director of the Bank of New York in 1814 (signatures dated 1840 partially removed from title vol. 1 and front free endpaper vol. 2). BAL 3892; Sabin 16493; Spiller & Blackburn 30. Peter Schermerhorn (1781-1852) was wealthy and prominent New York merchant. He was a ship chandler and a Director of the Bank of New York in 1814. Cooper was associated with the prominent Schermerhorn family, and mentions them in his European travels. In his letters he makes reference to Peter in an attempt to secure a commission on behalf of his sculptor friend Horatio Greenough See Letters and Journals , ed. by J.F. Beard, I, pp. 404-405.
