Beschreibung:

Postal cover, 6½ by 3½ inches with a Cape Canaveral, FLA "First Day of Issue" machine postmark dated FEB 20, 1962, unaddressed. The official release of this 4-cent Project Mercury stamp coincided with the launch of John Glenn's orbital Mercury flight. SIGNED by Gordon Cooper and Wernher von Braun. The postal cover is mounted between paragraphs of GORDON COOPER's signed provenance note, which reads: "This postal cover is from my personal collection. I had it signed by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center director Dr. Wernher von Braun. Dr. von Braun had a dynamic personality and was an inspiration to work with. I was the Mercury Astronaut team's Redstone booster specialist, one of the rockets Dr. von Braun pioneered. We used the Redstone for both Alan Shepard's and Gus Grissom's sub-orbital Mercury flights. Dr. von Braun's greatest achievement was the leader of the team that created the large Saturn V rocket, the vehicle that enabled the United States to land men on the moon back in July of 1969."
