This account of the author's travels in Asia Minor, Cyprus and Syria between 1809 and 1812 contains 'much information on the peoples of Lebanon and Syria and an account of the inland routes to Constantinople'. Corancez had been in Egypt as a member of Napoleon's scientific expedition, and was awarded the Legion of Honour while consul in Algiers, though poor health stopped him taking up the post of consul in Baghdad in 1810.
