Beschreibung:

cover 1869 (Jan.) large envelope (230x175mm.) marked "Service Royal" , from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens to the Greek Chargé d'Affairs in Washington D.C., U.S.A., bearing no less than sixty-nine examples of the 80 lepta on the front or reverse of the cover, comprising 1862-67 Second Athens Printing carmine shade strips of five (6), four, three and a single, and 1867-69 Cleaned Plates rose shade strips of five (5), three and singles (3); four (?) other adhesives have been removed from the cover. All are cancelled by lozenge "1" and with various transit c.d.s. and rate annotations. The cover inevitably has faults, mainly around the periphery which does impinge on some of the adhesives, there is also some overall age-staining. By far and away the largest known Large Hermes Head franking extant, and undoubtedly one of the most significant covers of this classic issue. Quite remarkable. Photo
