CRUIKSHANK, George (1792-1878) and CRUIKSHANK, Robert (1789-1856). London Characters . London: Joseph Robins, '1827'. Small 2° (157 x 97mm). 24 hand-coloured plates by George [15] and Robert [9] Cruikshank. Extra-illustrated with three drawings and a clipped signature, tipped on to the endpapers. (Title supplied, plates on various papers suggesting four or more new impressions, one drawing loose.) Later printed boards (light wear). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH THREE DRAWINGS and a clipped signature. The plates first appeared in the Gentleman's Pocket Magazine in 1827 and 1829; the rare first separate edition first appeared in 1829. The original copper-plates, and coloured impressions, surfaced in 1906 at the Truman sale; sets were then made-up, as here, with a title and completed as necessary; the present set includes at least four modern impressions.
