CRUIKSHANK, George (1792-1878). Scraps and Sketches . London: by the artists. 4 parts in one volume, oblong 2° (318 x 416mm). Together 24 plates on china mounted on heavy paper. (Spotting throughout, but heavier in parts 2 and 4 and sometimes affecting the plates.) Contemporary drab wrappers and perhaps later brown cloth spine (some wear and soiling); morocco-backed red clamshell case. Provenance : George Cruikshank (presentation inscription to:) -- Robert Melville Grindlay (1786-1877; tipped-in photograph and inscription gifting the book to:) -- 'St. Andrews'. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY CRUIKSHANK TO CAPTAIN GRINDLAY: 'with many thanks for his highly interesting and splendid work on Indian scenery, costume, etc.' Grindlay, a self-taught amateur artist, went to India in 1803, aged 17. Tooley has called his book, published 1826-1830,'the most attractive book on India' next to Daniel. Cohn 180. CRUIKSHANK, George -- TUPPER, M.F. Proverbial Philosophy . London: Thomas Hatchard, 1854. 8° (222 x 165mm). Illustrations throughout by Tenniel and others, after Vizetelly and others. (Occasional minor soiling.) Original blue cloth gilt (light soiling, spine and corners rubbed); morocco-backed green solander case (spine faded to brown).
